NCEA Level 1 Biology and Chemistry
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Zev Fishman.
In Biology and Chemistry, students explore the interconnected nature of Biology and Chemistry and take a look into how living organisms interact with the living and non-living parts of their environment
This course contributes towards endorsement at NCEA Level One. This course will prepare students for Level Two Chemistry (02CHE) and Level Two Biology (02BIO). Students who are planning on taking Level Two Physics and/or Level Two Earth Space Science should also take Level One Physics and Earth Space Science (01PES).
Course Overview
In the Biology area of this course, ākonga develop an understanding of the variation, continuity, and interconnectedness of life. They seek evidence to explain the nature of living things and interactions within and between biological systems. This includes how the environment can affect microorganisms and how microorganisms can in turn affect the environment. Ākonga also learn about genetic variation and the relationship this has with expressed traits.
The Chemistry learning area involves the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. Ākonga develop an understanding of the atomic composition of matter and use this to explain and predict the properties and behaviour of different everyday materials. The study of chemistry allows us to predict how substances may behave when surrounding conditions change, and how they react to form new substances.
Recommended Prior Learning
Students will have completed Year 9 and 10 Science, and have shown an interest or aptitude towards topics relating to Chemistry and/or Biology.
