NCEA Level 1 Physics and Earth and Space Science
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Zev Fishman, Emma Howden.
In Physics and Earth and Space Science, students will learn about the physical world around us, examining how our understanding of the natural environment has developed over time and how physics concepts have contributed to this. This course will help students to use science ideas to understand their environment, how we interact within our environment, and how humans are impacting and impacted by our natural environment.
This course contributes towards endorsement at NCEA Level One. This course will prepare students for Level Two Physics (02PHY) and Level Two Earth and Space Science (02ESS). Students who are planning on taking Level Two Chemistry and/or Biology should also take Level One Biology and Chemistry (01BIC).
Course Overview
Term 1
Our course starts by developing your understanding of Earth Science through the concept of energy. We will investigate the four spheres that make up our planet, and how energy drives changes within and between these spheres. The term culminates with our first assessment, researching how human action has caused change to our Earth (PES1.1).
Term 2
Term Two focuses on developing your scientific investigation skills in the context of motion. We will work to determine how energy transfer and forces affect the motion of objects. This will be assessed as an internal Investigation assessment into a particular physics phenomena (PES1.2). At the end of the term, we will study electrical energy to prepare for our end of year exam.
Term 3
After completing our electrical energy unit, we will bring together all of our learning about energy and how it affects change for our PES1.4 end of year exam. After that, we will focus on the Sun, Earth and Moon System, learning to explain phenomena such as tides, eclipses and seasons. This will be assessed in the Derived Grade Exams at the end of term (PES1.3).
Term 4
This term will focus on revision and external assessment preparation for PES 1.4 (Energy in a System).
Recommended Prior Learning
Students will have completed Year 9 and 10 Science, and have shown an interest or aptitude towards topics relating to Physics and/or Earth and Space Science.
