NCEA Level 2 Art History
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Rogan James.
NCEA Level 2 Art History
“Every picture tells a story” - Studying Art History teaches you to unpick these stories and gives you the skills to understand the visual world. Art History is about our history.
Art History is aimed at students who have an interest in Art and wish to learn how and why it has been produced. It does not require any practical skills in Art and is ideal for students interested in History, Design, English and even aspects of the Performing Arts.
At this level we study the topic “Towards Modernism”. This looks at the art and architectural innovations of the 1800s, the impact this had on society then and compares it to our thinking and attitudes now.
Students will delve into the artistic approaches of Neo-Classicism right through to the stylistic developments of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. You will explore the works of David, Delacroix, Courbet as well as Monet, Degas, Ceźanne and Van Gogh.
Students will develop their ability to research, analyse, and write in an investigative way in response to artists, artworks and the historical context in which the work is made.
Please note that there is a heavy written component to this course.
