NCEA Level 2 Chemistry

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Zev Fishman.

This course expands on the Chemistry content you covered in Level 1 Biology/Chemistry or Level 1 Science General, and focuses on understanding the properties of different substances, how these substances may alter when the surrounding conditions change, and how they may react to form new substances.

The theory and practical assessments enable students to learn the techniques and skills needed to work in laboratory situations.

NOTE: This course offers External Achievement Standard 91165 (Chemistry 2.5), as an optional assessment opportunity.

Course Overview

Term 1
We start the year with a two week, hands on introduction to chemistry. We make a battery, make copper metal, and extract caffeine from Red Bull. We then focus on foundation chemistry knowledge before our first internal assessment; oxidation reduction.

Term 2
The first half of Term 2 is learning about how we test for the presence of some substances in our food or waterways and completing the internal assessment on this. The rest of the term is learning for our first external (91164).

Term 3
We work on the second External Assessment all about acids and bases and rates of reactions, before preparing for the Derived Grade Exams.

Term 4
Term 4 is dedicated to exam preparation.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students will need to have passed two Level 1 Science externals.

Students coming from Academic Science must have passed the Chemistry external at Merit or above. Students coming from General Science will be subject to teacher approval.
