NCEA Level 2 Chemistry

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Z. Fishman.

This course expands on the Chemistry content you covered in Level 1 Science or Level 1 Science General, and focuses on understanding the properties of different substances, how these substances may alter when the surrounding conditions change, and how they may react to form new substances.

The theory and practical assessments enable students to learn the techniques and skills needed to work in laboratory situations.

NOTE: This course offers Internal Achievement Standard 91163 (Chemistry 2.3), and External Achievement Standard 91166 (Chemistry 2.6), as optional assessment opportunities.

Course Overview

Term 1
We start the year with a focus on the first External Assessment, looking at the properties of particles and substances. This is followed by a practical Internal Assessment to identify species in solution.

Term 2
We finish working through the first Practical Assessment and then move on to the second Internal Assessment to investigate Redox reactions. By the end of this term we start the last research Internal Assessment about a current chemical technology.

Term 3
We finish off the second External Assessment before preparing for the Derived Grade Exams.

Term 4
Term 4 is dedicated to exam preparation.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students will need to have passed two Level 1 Science externals.

Students coming from Academic Science must have passed the Chemistry external at Merit or above. Students coming from General Science will be subject to teacher approval.
