Course Description

Teacher in Charge: R. Woodhall-Martin.

We need to be able to care for ourselves and others. Food has a huge role to play in all aspects of our lives from family gatherings to eating the right food so we can get through the day. Many people will have more than one career in their lifetime.

  • We need the ability to work in teams, communicate with others.

  • We need to have resilience, good self-management skills, willingness to learn and thinking skills.

  • We need creative and critical thinking skills

  • We need to understand the many factors that influence our food choices and therefore our own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others.

  • We need to be able to cook so we are not dependent on the food industry for our food

  • We need to look after our food environment

We need these skills and many more at school, in the workplace and in all aspects of life. Studying Food and nutrition will enable you to develop these skills.

To learn these skills we will explore three main topics:

  • Food handling – how to store, prepare, cook and serve food so it is safe to eat.

  • Basic nutrition – developing knowledge and understanding on what nutritious food choices look like so you are able to make informed choices for yourself and others.

  • Interpreting nutrition information - so we can make nutritious food choices.

  • Practical skills – developing your cooking skills, managing your work area safely and efficiently.

Students will do a mix of internal and external assessment tasks.
