NCEA Level 1 Social Studies
Course Description

This year-long course builds on student skills from the junior Social Science programme and introduces key skills needed for 02 NCEA subjects, including 02 Social Studies and 02 Media.
Across the year students will study a range of different national and global contexts, all focused on understanding how societies function, in complex and nuanced ways.
For our Aotearoa New Zealand case studies students will explore social action, how it works and its effectiveness, for a range of contemporary issues including Family Violence; Poverty; Climate change. Our second main case study explores masculinity in Aotearoa New Zealand cultures, and students will learn about the concepts of identity and representation, applying these to the case study theme.
From a global perspective, students will study the rise and use of Social Media as an example of global communication and its use as both a political and social platform, considering the various impacts this has on social and personal wellbeing and engagement with others.
Finally, students will look at the Standing Rock protest movement, to understand what this social action is, why it is happening and its goals. Students will be able to draw a range of connections between global and local indigenous protest movements.
Recommended Prior Learning
Year 10 Social Studies of advantage but not compulsory - Year 9 or 10 Media Studies also acceptable.
