Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning:

This course is designed for students whose first language is not English.

Entry will be based on an initial English Language assessment and an interview with the Teacher in Charge of ESL.



ELAF: You will learn the basics of the English language, so that you are able to understand the world around you, and be able to participate in school life.


ELA1: You will build and expand your knowledge of the English language. You will start to feel more confidence in understanding class tasks, and will be able to submit some Unit Standards. You will also start preparing for the Level 1 Literacy CAA Writing exam.


ELA2: You will consolidate your knowledge of the English language so that you are able to submit a range of class assessments with confidence. You will be improving your accuracy ready for the Level 1 Literacy CAA Writing exam.


ELA3: You will extend your knowledge of the English language to cover complex ideas. You will be improving your accuracy ready for the Level 1 Literacy CAA Writing exam, and you will start working towards UE Literacy.

Assessment Information

All areas in this course are internally assessed, with the opportunity to gain up to a maximum of 30 credits from Unit Standards at Level 1, or up to a maximum of 20 credits at Level 2.
The students on this course will be carefully guided in the level of standards attempted to best suit their learning needs.

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
